McNair Scholars Program Central Michigan University

Mentors - Announcements

Summer 2009

Dear McNair Mentors,

Please be reminded of several items related to the Summer Research Institute which began this week. The scholars will be attending the GRE prep course, graduate school workshops and work sessions (during which they can work on assignments, research, etc.) during the hours of 8 and 12 p.m. on Monday - Thursday's through the month of June. July is more flexible in that they will be attending GRE review sessions and work sessions on Tuesday's and Thursday's only. The scholars are required to be working 20 hours per week (on average) on their research, 10 hours on GRE prep and 10 hours on grad prep with the exception of the week of May 18 (orientation week), the week of May 25 (grad school boot camp) and the week prior to the July 4 weekend (time off). You may access the summer schedule under "scholar forms/handouts" in addition to viewing all scholar handouts, assignments, etc. posted under "current scholars" and the "2009 cohort." FYI.

We hope that in addition to guiding the students in their research that you are also able to share your input as it relates to their search for appropriate graduate programs and preparation for the application process including things like crafting their personal statements, making contact with prospective faculty advisors, etc.

Please note the following important dates:
Week of June 22 - I will request a scholar progress report
July 13 - presentation practice session (mentors are always welcome to attend)
July 17 - draft final paper due
August 7 - final paper due (and draft PowerPoint and poster for the fall)

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We appreciate your time working with the scholars this summer and look forward to them arriving at some interesting results in the upcoming months. We were very pleased with the spring research symposium and the great job the students did on their research proposals - thank you!
